DOREEN MARKHAM (nee Whitehead) - The death occurred on October 31, 2018 at Woodstock Hospital of M. Doreen Markham in her 101st year. She was the wife of the late W. Derwood Markham, and was the daughter of the late L. Roy and Maud (Bird) Whitehead, and sister of the late Beverly Whitehead. Doreen was the proud mother of Dr. Larry Markham (wife Wan) of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, and Dr. Barry Markham (wife Lynne) of London, Ontario. She had four grandchildren, Wesley Markham (wife Lisa) of New Jersey, Kevin Markham (wife Annie) of North Carolina, Dr. Christopher Markham (wife Kathleen) of Dorchester, and Dr. Alexis Markham (husband Josh) of London. She also had six great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Xavier of New Jersey, Cameron and Molly of London, Edith of Dorchester, and Ian of North Carolina. Doreen was born in 1918 in Woodstock. She married Der Markham in 1943 at New St Paul’s Anglican Church in Woodstock when he was in the Canadian Army during WW2. When Der and her brother Bev Whitehead came home after the War, they founded Whitehead Furniture with her father Roy Whitehead. Their store was in business for more than 30 years on Finkle Street in Woodstock. After Der passed away in 1984, Doreen continued to live in their house on Light Street for the next 34 years until her death. She drove her own car until she was 97 years old. She was a good swimmer into her 80’s, and young swimmers remarked “Look at that old lady go!” Doreen was a lifelong animal lover, and was especially devoted to her black miniature poodles. She was an avid and accomplished figure skater and pianist at one time. She was also an excellent pool player up to a few days before she passed away. Doreen’s strong Christian beliefs sustained her throughout her life. The family will greet guests at the Smith-LeRoy Funeral Home, 69 Wellington St. North, Woodstock (519-537-3611) on Saturday, November 3, 2018 from 10:00 am - 10:45 am. Doreen’s funeral service will be at 11:00 am in the chapel. Interment will follow in the Anglican Cemetery, Woodstock. As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to the Church of the Epiphany.
